A building number you can see from the street.

The brief

Brewery Place is a group of office buildings at Brewery Wharf on the Leeds waterfront. Number 7 needed a feature for its glazed ground floor lobby: something that tells people outside which building they are looking at, and that catches the eye by day and after dark.

Our answer was a freestanding light rather than a sign on the wall. Two 700 mm opal acrylic cubes stack one on the other. The top cube is printed in the building’s teal with a big black 7 on all four faces, and the bottom cube carries the Brewery Place logo on all four faces, so it reads from every angle, inside and through the glass.

Each cube is lit from the inside by a clear acrylic core wrapped in COB LED tape on every side, which spreads the light evenly across the faces in bright 5000K white, with the transformer hidden inside. The cubes interlock, with an opening cut through so power reaches the top cube, and a single lead leaves the bottom. It is plug and go, and the bottom panel comes off for servicing.

Before anything was made, the client signed off the artwork for both cubes and mock-ups of the cubes standing in a glazed office lobby, checking the sizes, colours and positions.
